Mid-term exam;
ES380: 21st Century Global Challenges
Due at the beginning of class on Thursday, March 20th,
2008
In this assignment, you are to write a dialogue – think of
it as a screenplay! - about social change in the 21st Century. The dialogue is to include the following dramatis
personae:
You
James Scott
Jane Jacobs
William Easterly
Jeffrey Sachs
Will Bates
Michael Woolcock
Paul Hawken
David Bornstein
Florence Nightingale
Another social entrepreneur in
Bornstein’s book
Another social entrepreneur not in
Bornstein’s book
In 2400 words or less, write a dialogue in which the
following occur:
- You
describe the challenge that you are studying to the other personae
- A
subset of them react to what you describe and offer suggestions about
tackling the challenge
- A
subset of them react to the comments of others
- You
react to the overall set of comments
This cycle of comments may continue …
To get a high grade on this exam, your dialogue must be
lively, well-informed, and illuminating.
Avoid generalizations; use specific, relevant material from the reading.
The exchanges among the dramatis personae should illustrate how some
material that we have studied complements other material. (And your dramatis personae can use,
judiciously, visual, video and audio pieces of evidence from the web. For example, Paul Hawken might provide a link
to http://www.wiserearth.org/ to make a point.)
